The newly designed Osymetric chainrings are designed to enhance a riders power output and performance by eliminating their dead spot during each pedal stroke. Catering for the serious cyclist, these Inner chainrings (5-spider) come in various sizes.
These Osymetric chainrings are not the standard 'round' type of chainrings nor are they oval or ellipse either, but asymmetric. This unique shape (twin-cam) has been designed to maximise the riders power output and performance with every pedal stroke allowing for a 7-10% power (watts) increase resulting in a gain of speed by 3%, so Osymetric claim. Not only does this increase riders performance it can reduce lactic acid by 10% also.

Osymetric chainrings eliminate dead spots allowing a natural pedaling cadence decreasing lactic acid, but provides a power gain of 10% at threshold
Once fitted, getting used to these chainrings will take a few rides or so and your legs may feel sore after the first ride, but this is natural due to the chainring shape and the different muscle groups used during your pedaling. Once adapted though, the benefits and gain are great as you have increased you power and speed by actually doing the same if using standard chainrings. Plus your legs are benefiting from less lactic acid being produced making you ride faster and harder longer.
Osymetric and Pro-Tour Teams
Osymetric chainrings can be found in the Pro-tour peloton, but usually the their branding is blanked out due to teams sponsorship deals etc. Some riders are permitted to use them but just for performance gains only. Osymetric has clocked up podium places and victories at many races including the Criterium Du Dauphine, Tour of Romandie, Paris-Nice and on the Grand tours such as Tour of Spain (Vuelta) , Tour of Italy (Giro d'Italia) and more noticeable at the 2012 and 2013 Tour de France.
Installing these Osymetric chainrings is straightforward - similar to fitting standard rings. You'll also have to raise the front derailleur setting your upper and lower limits to compensate the mech movement. Please follow the instructions that come with the chainrings or watch the video located on the video tab above the image. Or simply pop down to your local bike shop and ask them to fit for you. We would also recommend that you fit a new chain also.

Chainrings are fitted to the crank arms and come in single, double or triple configuration. Most geared bikes use a 3/32 inch width, whereas 1/8 inch is the popular choice for track bikes and some single speeds due to its increased strength which is needed when riding a fixed wheel. Chainrings are available in a number of formats, these are known as PCD's (Pitch Circle Diameter) or BCD's (Bolt Circle Diameter), this is the spacing of the bolts that secure the rings to the crank arms. Common sizes are 74mm inner ring Shimano MTB, 110mm middle and outer for Shimano MTB, 110mm for most compact chainsets to allow for the smaller ring combo's, 130mm for Standard Shimano Road and 135mm for Standard Campagnolo road chainsets.
